About the music

For most of the Omer, Jewish tradition sets music aside — which is why Lag BaOmer, the 33rd day, arrives as a burst of song. The centerpiece is Bar Yochai, the 16th-century hymn in honor of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, sung around bonfires and at the great celebration in Meron, along with Amar Rabbi Akiva, V'ahavta L'reiacha Kamocha and the Meron niggunim of the Chassidic world.

The Kol Yehudim Show's Lag BaOmer broadcast opens the season of weddings and outdoor simchas with the Chassidic dance music that comes back to life on this day.

Why is music special on Lag BaOmer?

Music and weddings are traditionally paused during the Omer period of semi-mourning; Lag BaOmer lifts that pause, so it is celebrated with bonfires, dancing and songs like Bar Yochai.
