About the music of the Days of Awe

The month of Elul opens with the daily shofar blast — T'kiah, Sh'varim, T'ruah — and the season's melodies build from there: the piyyutim of Selichot, Avinu Malkeinu ("Our Father, Our King") sung on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Hineni (the cantor's plea before Musaf), Unetaneh Tokef ("who shall live and who shall die"), and Kol Nidrei, the haunting Aramaic declaration that opens Yom Kippur. Chazzanim, Chassidic composers, Israeli singers and contemporary American artists have all set these words to music, and The Kol Yehudim Show plays them side by side, from the classics to the cutting edge.
